September 16 Paying for hurrican recoveryThe NY Times posted an article today describing President Bush's refusal to raise taxes to pay for hurricane recovery. His reasoning: "We got to maintain economic growth, and therefore we should not raise taxes." (read the article here)
The article points out that many Republican deficit hawks will have problems with this because it's unlikely that spending cuts will fully pay for the recovery.
Could this be the second "no new taxes" pledge from a Bush president? Could a promise like this, potentially taken into mid-term elections, and then broken, severely hurt the Republican Presidential candidate in 2008?
