Taking Action to Fight Genocide

The Senate recently passed the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act of 2005 (S. 1462) and the House will soon vote on its companion bill (HR. 3127).

Gencide Hits Home is a great site that explains the situation and provides information on how to take action.  Check it out and post your comments.

Thanks to Americans for Informed Democracy for pointing out this site in a recent post.

Cantwell leads the fight against drilling in ANWR

Sen. Cantwell, together with 40 Democrats and 2 Republicans, blocked a bill that would have allowed oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).  As Lydia Weiss of Defenders of Wildlife put it, "This is the greatest environmental victory of the year."

The major proponent of the measure, Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, attached this measure to a defense spending bill after moderate Republicans blocked its addition to the House comprehensive budget.  That move forced legislators to block defense spending in order to block to drilling measure.  Sen. Stevens, nicknamed the Incredible Hulk, even wore his Incredible Hulk tie but it wasn't enough.  As Mike Dewine, one of the Republicans who joined the Democrats, explained, "We've got to find other ways to be energy independent."

Stevens even began threatening Democrats on the floor: "I'm going to go to every one of your states, and I'm going to tell them what you've done...You've taken away from homeland security the one source of revenue that was new ... I'm sure that the senator from Washington [Cantwell] will enjoy my visits to Washington."

Show Senator Cantwell your support by sending her a message.  You can even send a note to Stevens in the interest of saving him a plane ticket.

Republicans Pull Budget from House Floor

House Republicans were forced to pull their budget proposal from the floor today because of a lack of votes.  Read a press release from Nancy Pelosi here.

This is a fantastic step as that budget included tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans while making drastic cuts to important programs like federal student loans.

Thanks to everyone who called, wrote an email, or wrote a letter about how the program cuts affect you.  It's your voices that make it easy for our representatives to stand up to the Republican leadership and oppose this bill.

Great news on ANWR

Republicans in the House gave up trying to add drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge to the filibuster-proof budget bill after many moderate Republicans opposed it.

This is great news and I hope it's part of a change in the national political scene indicated by the many Democratic wins in this week's elections.

More on the Raid on Student Aid

Here's an update on the Raid on Student Aid from Rep. Nancy Pelosi's office.  CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TO SAY YOU OPPOSE THE MASSIVE BUDGET CUTS TO STUDENT AID.  You can find the phone numbers of Washington's representatives here.  You can find the rest by searching at http://www.house.gov

Next week, the House of Representatives will vote on a package of budget cuts that includes $14.3 billion in overall cuts to the federal student aid programs over the next five years.  Included in these cuts are nearly $8 billion in new charges to students and families that will raise the cost of their college loans.  At the request of Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has detailed how these $8 billion in new charges to student and parent borrowers are achieved.
